Got any tips on how to network?

I'm looking to better learn how to network. I am a beginner at this kind of stuff. So I made a myspace page. That seems like a pretty good networking site. Easy to find people. So I am adding people, I've even met an author which was an extreme plus. I've found all these myspace adder programs, all that I have found are ones that make you manually click them all day. Though they provide the pages to add people, it is still grueling to have to sit and click on them all day long. Do you know of a safe, free, legitimate program that doesn't require you to click on the on all day long? Oh and for those things I always see - the " me"s (sorry) what is that about? How does that work? How do I see regular people with 1.5k friends and such??
